Technology, Reading, and Writing

In our generation technology is all over the place and has made life a lot easier in many ways. However not all the effects of technology are positive. Reading and writing in today's youth has suffered due to recent technology. AIM lingo and grammar has replaced proper writing. Young people including myself don't write well because we are so used to texting and IMing our friends using many slang words that don't belong in the classroom or a professional setting.

I agree that our youth (including us) has suffered greatly with advancements in technology. I believe reading off of computer screens is becoming a hazard to our youth's health - and they spend endless hours in front of the screen whether it be for IMing or for browsing. The language, like you said, has corrupted the way English should be and is causing students to fall short of teacher expectations when it comes not only to reading, but mostly to writing. I also believe handwriting has become atrocious because we're so used to typing things out. People's signatures are barely legible!

A lot of people tend to believe that the writing skills of the youth have suffered because of things like texting and IMing. However, most linguists would disagree with this idea. Studies on this topic have shown that most students know the difference between academic writing like essay writing and casual writing like texting and IMing. In other words, the two types of writing are usually kept separate (as you yourself have shown with your post here.)
