literacy in history

thinking about all the different aids i could use, i feel that visual aids along with primary sources are the key to students' literacy. primary sources are first hand accounts of an event and used along with say a movie would be very effective because they would get the actual point of view and the hollywood version. literacy is very important in history because without it, learning the information would be extremely difficult.

Good, but I want to know more, Ryan. Give me an example of a primary source you might use and the literacy practices associated with it. What would the student do with the source? How would they understand it? How does literacy come into play in that understanding?

I think that is a good combination. Primary sources can give a great view through the eyes of those the events surrounded. It may also spur more in-depth thought due to the language used in early America or England. Sometimes it is difficult to decipher what the author is saying in such language and figuring it out could lead to an interesting discussion. Visual aids would back up and solidify these discussions with some images that are easy to grasp.
