Storytelling in Health

I think storytelling can be incorporated into health and pe. in various topics. For example, in an alcoholism and drug topic you could have stories of what happens to people when they abuse alcohol and drugs. You could also tell stories of what happens when people overtrain during weight training and of what happens to people. I'm sure there are other times when you could use storytelling, but it is difficult to thing of in health and pe.

I think storytelling could be a huge aspect in teaching health. It's one thing for a student to read in a textbook that "drugs are bad" or "don't have unprotected sex." But when you tell first person accounts how drug addiction has ruined lives or have an AIDS patient come in and speak to a classroom, you can really make an impression with students.

As a physical education & health major I think it is much more direct in how to incorporate storytelling in Health yet, in physical education class you could you could have stories about the sports you are teaching, effects of fitness training, or even about athlets in the certain sports.

I think story telling can be used in any subject area, and I find it pretty easy to incorporate it into health. There are all kinds of stories about sportsmanship, competition, health, wellness, etc. Even look at the movies that come out (i.e. We are Marshall, Remember the Titans, etc.) or different clips from 48hrs and shows like that. These are all telling stories that pertain to health. I believe the same can be done for other content areas as well.

Storytelling is both essential and can be presented during PE and Health class. I'm sure that many of us PE majors have read some type of book related to healthy behaviors and inspiring team sports stories that we can teach our students. I see storytelling to be a mental influence for students to obtain knowledge and become familiar to and recognize the positive and negative outcomes.

Storytelling is extremely important in teaching health. There are many horor stories that happen to children and young adults that if not retold would defeat the purpose of learning from somebody else's mistake.
