Memories of Learning to Read

To be honest I do not recall to much about learning to read. I do remember, that in first grade I was interested in reading a book my older sister was reading, I was told that it was too hard for me and should put it away. I also recall being terrified to read out loud, I was one of those kids that tried to figure out which paragraph I would have to read. I was never a fluent out loud reader. To be honest I still do not think I am.
From being terrified to read aloud, when I sub and the class has reading to do and they want to read together I will not just cold call on someone, or if we are going around the room, all the student has to do is say pass and the next person will read. I do however verify that they are doing their work.

I don't really remember much about learning to read either. I just know that I always liked to challenge myself while reading- if I had finished a book that we were to read, I would either re-read it or try a different harder book. I did the same thing as you said when being asked to read aloud. I would always go ahead to my paragraph and read it to myself first just to make sure I knew how to say the words and to pace myself!

Like both Randie and Caterina, I don't really have a memory of learning to read. I remember reading with my mom or dad every night before I went to bed or in school, but I don't remember how like I did it. I did the same thing when it came to reading aloud and I still do that know. I don't exactly like reading aloud because I am a really fast talker and people usually have a hard time understanding me. So now, when I know I have to read aloud I try and skip ahead so I know what I am reading but I can usually never pace myself.

I'm in the same boat with you guys. I don't have a real memories of reading. I remember going to the library in school and out of school with my mom. I can remember books that I read but I don't really recall reading them until I got to middle school. Today I read more then ever so I guess it doesn't really matter that I don't remember learning to read.

If you don't remember learning to read, that suggests to me that you probably did fine and it wasn't traumatic for you. Mostly those who remember it remember learning to read simply because it was so hard, or they hated it so much.

I too don't remember how I learned how to read. What I do remember is that I skept and went straight to 1st grade 7 months before I turned 6 yrs old. The principle had me on prabation and told my mom that if I didn't respond well I had to wait until I turned 6. I was fascinated about wearing uniforms (Lima, Peru) and reading the alphabet. I did well and made it in 1st grade, I enjoyed reading but I hated when I learned how to write, my hands were under stress and I used to scribble a lot out of anger! I was one of those kids that had to cover my ears to read because since 1st grade up until now I need complete silence to focus, although I learned to managed that slightly better.
